Notebook Battery daily maintenance FAQ

Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached directly by clicking on the diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.

Needs AC Adapter to boot? The first step in troubleshooting your inspiron e1705 battery is determining whether it can hold enough charge to boot the notebook. Will the laptop power up and run on the battery, or does the AC adapter which doubles as the laptop battery charger need to be plugged in? Modern notebooks usually have a whole array of status LEDs that will tell you if the laptop senses good power coming from the battery charger and whether or not the battery is charging. Unfortunately, there’s no universal standard for these LEDs, their colors or their actions. Note also that we’re using the term “boot” rather loosely here. If the laptop powers up on battery, you can hear the fans and the drives, your troubleshooting problem lies elsewhere.

Life Of Battery Too Short? This is the main problem laptop owners complain about, and often for good cause. Older laptops using Ni-Cad and early Ni-MH inspiron 6400 batteries often ran for 2.5 to 3.5 hours when brand new, but within a month or so, would barely keep the notebook powered up for an hour. Newer laptops using Ni-MH and Li-ION batteries are much better, often holding onto a three hour life through hundreds of charge and discharge cycles. The first line of defense against complaints about battery life by the manufacturers is always, “Did you charge and operate the battery according to the manual?” Unfortunately, different laptop manufacturers seem to disagree over how to best treat GD761 batteries of the same technology, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the differences extend to different models from the same manufacturer.

If the laptop’s Dell D610 battery life has been slowly degrading over time, it’s probably operating more or less in accordance with plan, but if you find the operating life shortened by more than 15% or 20% within the first few months, there’s probably something wrong. Batteries of all technologies can be “trained” to perform poorly through non-ideal usage patterns, but the Li-ION battery technology is pretty resistant, and as long as you run them all the way down once a month or so, you can probably prevent any serious charging memory issues.

Is Battery New? Purchasers of brand-new laptops are often surprised to find the battery is dead, or runs down very quickly. Even if the a1175 battery was fully charged when the laptop was boxed for shipment, that box may have been sitting in a warehouse for six months or a year before you purchased it in a store, more than enough time for a notebook battery to self discharge to an appreciable degree, even if it’s not being drawn upon. If the battery isn’t new, and you just received the laptop as a hand-me-down or purchased it second hand, there’s no reason to expect that a short Ibook G4 battery life is due to anything other than an aged battery. You can try to recondition the battery (see the laptop manufacturer website for for software that may be available), but odds are the battery simply can’t hold a charge the way it did when it was new.

User Condition Powerbook G4 Battery? Some manufacturers may condition the battery before installation in the laptop, others expect you to read the owners manual instructions and do it yourself in the first few days you own the laptop. The most general procedure is to charge the battery fully before use (leaving it on the AC battery charger overnight is best), and then to run exclusively on battery until the battery is discharged. Some brands suggest you run until the operating system warns of low battery life remaining, which could be anywhere from 10% to 3% remaining on standard settings. Others recommend that you run the laptop until it shuts itself down. This doesn’t mean that you have to sit there working for three or four hours, you can run the Macbook Pro battery down over multiple sessions over multiple days. The important thing is not to plug the AC power adapter back in and start recharging the battery until it is completely run down. The condition process generally requires you to go through this cycle three times in a row.

Runs Always With aspire 3000 Battery? If the owners manual for your notebook suggests removing the battery when plugged in for prolonged periods, doing so may greatly prolong the battery life in terms of both charge cycles and years. Personally, I tend to be lazy and just leave the battery in all the time, despite the fact I almost always work plugged in. The battery life on the first couple Toshiba’s I owned dropped down to a half hour or so of running time within a few months my buying them, so it may have been my fault. Li-ION Aspire 3000 batteries are much more friendly to poor power management habits, but you should run them down to empty once a month to keep them from developing a memory.

Battery conditioning means training the individual LCBTP03003 battery cells into a pattern of giving as much power as they can and accepting the largest charge that they can. It would take an advanced chemistry text and a person much smarter than I to describe the underlying reasons for battery memory, and the techniques for best charging and storing batteries sometimes contradict one another. Once a laptop battery pack is conditioned, you may still need to run it all the way down once a month for best performance, especially if you normally work with the laptop plugged in. It’s important to read the owners manual section on battery life, because different models ship with different battery technologies, and the best practices to extend the battery life may not be the same.

Improving apple notebook by calibrating your battery

You can calibrate your iBook, PowerBook, MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro computer’s lithium ion battery for best performance.

The battery has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery as it charges and discharges. The a1175 battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate and to keep the battery operating at maximum?efficiency. You should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months after that. If you normally leave your Apple portable computer connected to AC?power and very rarely use it on battery power you may want to perform this process once a month. The website?www.apple.com/batteries?has more helpful information regarding batteries and offers an iCal calendar to remind you to calibrate your battery.?

iBooks and PowerBook G4s other than the PowerBook G4 battery (15-inch Double-Layer SD)

  1. Plug the power adapter in and fully charge your computer’s a1185 A1022 battery until the battery indicator lights turn off and the adapter plug light goes from amber to green, which indicates that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter and use your iBook or PowerBook. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen. Continue to use your computer until it goes to sleep. At that point the battery has been sufficiently drained for calibration.
  3. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

You have to fully charge and then discharge your battery only once to calibrate it. After that, you can connect and disconnect the power adapter when the battery is at any charge level.

Tip: When the A1175 A1185 battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually holds a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, any open files could be lost. Therefore, it is important that you find an electrical outlet and connect the adapter before the forced shutdown occurs.

The battery calibration for the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) and any model of MacBook or MacBook Pro has been updated because of a new A1079 battery released with this computer. With these computers, follow these steps to calibrate your battery:

  1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook’s battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
  3. Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
  4. At this point, save your work.? Continue to use your computer; when the PowerBook G4 battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.
  5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
  6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

Tip: When the battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode. The A1079 battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers, the computer’s memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

Dell inspiron 510M review

The Inspiron 510M Specs

  • CPU Intel Pentium M : 1.7GHz
  • Chipset manufacturer & model : Intel i855GM
  • System memory (quantity & type) : 512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
  • Memory slots (occupied/free) : 1 1
  • Max memory in current configuration/supported : 768MB/1GB
  • Hard disk manufacturere & model : Hitatchi Travelstar 80GN
  • Hard disk size/interface & speed : 60GB/UDMA100/4,200
  • Optical drive (make & model) : Samsung SN-324F
  • Optical drive (speed & supported media) : 24x CD-R, 10x CD-RW, 24x CD-ROM, 8x DVD-ROM
  • Network card (manufacturer & speed) : Intel Pro/100 VE 10/100MBit, Broadcom 802.11a/b/g 54/11Mbit
  • Battery Code : c1295 6y270 3r305

The Dell Inspiron 510m is a little bit different from Inspiron series of the past, the Inspiron 510m battery is market for small business users and designers. Up from the design and characteristics the inspiron 510m may more like Inspiron 5000 series, but it still have some important changes. The use of integrated graphics chip is the most significant changes of Inspiron 510m battery Series as Inspiron 5000.

But since the general view that business users will not use the notebook to play games, so graphics chips change and users will not be a focus obef debate. More importantly, the changes should be three times the bandwidth of its built-in 802.11 WiFi wireless card, you can use it 802.11a/b/g wireless network connection. This means that with this Inspiron 510m latitude d610 battery, you can connect wireless Internet access all over the world. This is a good news for the people who often necessarily carry books around the staff. In addition to WiFi wireless card, this Inspiron 510m is also a standard Bluetooth interface, as long as you have a Bluetooth cell phone support, you can send and receive an email anywhere.

Although this Inspiron 510m with Pentium M 1.7GHz processor, but there is no Intel Centrino paste (Centrino) label, it is because its wireless chip is not Intel, but Broadcom produced. Another regret is that Inspiron 510m is only 256MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory as latitude D600 battery, although you can slowly upgrade their own future, the cost to upgrade is much cheaper than buy from Dell, but the two memory slots are filled. The laptop have a big enough hard drive, a 60GB, standard DVD / CD-RW combo drive which is the mainstream of the current configuration.

1400×1050 resolution is very common in many 15-inch notebook screen , and Inspiron 510m course this is no exception. We mentioned above, the laptop is the use of integrated graphics chips, so it is not ideal when running 3D applications, but running Windows system and DVD playback with 3R505 is not a problem . Intel Extreme integrated graphics chip to allow the largest share 64MB of system memory, but performance of the system maybe solow if you show too much memory.

The most problem of Inspiron 510m is the inspiron 510m battery capacity. Inspiron 510m battery only can last 2 hours 28 minutes. Although this and the Dell battery standard work time, but I think that for business users that is too short. Commercial users for 2 hours 28 minutes is also too short. In order to solve the problem of Dell D610 battery, Dell provides a choice of a second C1295 battery. Dell said this back-up battery to provide them with additional two hours of electricity.

Conclusion:
From its characteristics, performance and battery life, the Inspiron 510m is really a hodgepodge of laptop. Its distinctive characteristics, a moderate level of performance (although within plus 256M Kept on will increase performance), short laptop battery life. However, it is not expensive relative to the prices, or be a rugged business notebook.

The HP notebook Problems in 2009

Problems with faulty Nvidia graphics chips that caused large numbers of notebook computers to fail last year may not be over yet — at least for some.

Some HP users are complaining that their laptops, which were not included in the company’s official list of affected machines, are facing problems similar to what other users experienced last year.

“When I boot up my laptop, it says there’s no driver and I can’t install one. That means my machine locks up and shuts down,” says Dana Hight, a HP notebook user who runs a web development company. “It is clearly related to what happened with Nvidia chips last year.” Hight has bought his laptop about a year and half ago.

But he, along with other users in one of HP’s online support forums, say the company won’t recognize his laptop model as one of the versions affected by the faulty Nvidia chips. Hight has the DV9549US model. HP did not respond to a request for comment about the complaints. Now Lenovo update its ThinkPad X200 to solve this probelm.

Last year many consumers saw notebooks and desktops PCs that refused to boot up, did not detect wireless networks or offer any video on the monitor. HP acknowledged problems with about 38 desktops and 14 notebook models, Pavilion DV5 battery. In October, 2008, HP issued BIOS fixes and a limited extended warranty for these machines. Nvidia has said a problem with the packaging material for some of its chipsets led to the high failure rates. Dell and Apple also reported problems with Nvidia chips in 2008.

But Hight and other users in HP’s forums complain that their notebook models from the dv95xx series are facing similar issues.

“About two months ago I started noticing flickering and the system locking up, shutting down and rebooting,” says Hight. “It started getting worse but HP told me their technicians are not aware of anything with my chipset for HP newest notebook Pavilion DV7.

Hight, who had bought extended warranty with the now bankrupt Circuit City says he has two options: to pay up to $400 to get a new motherboard, but with the same chipset from Nvidia; or buy a new machine that will cost hundreds of dollars.

A quick look through a thread on one of HP’s online support forums reveals similar complaints. HP technicians, say the users online, will not acknowledge their problems as being related to the bad Nvidia chips.

HP has not responded to Wired.com’s request for comment. Pavilion DV4 battery

Hight says HP should step up and replace the faulty laptops instead of offering piecemeal fixes. “I would expect HP to give us a solution,” says Hight. “Why should users who paid $800 to get a HP laptop have to pay now because they got a bad machine?”

Battery recycle

March 3rd, 2009  Tagged , , ,

Battery recycle

Battery is generally cylindrical in shape with two terminals, one positive electrode and one negative electrode that conduct electricity along with a substance called electrolyte, that works on the electrodes, chemically and help convert into electrical energy. There is a copper wire that connects the two electrodes. Materials that are used in batteries are carbon, alkaline, chlorine, lithium ion, lead, nickel, sodium, silicon, copper, etc.

Batteries are classified into two- Dry cells and wet cells. The wet cell batteries are also termed storage battery ( VGP-BPS5) as they can be recharged as many times as possible. Batteries are also divided as rechargeable and non-rechargeable or disposable batteries. The second type is again termed as primary cells, used till the chemical that produce the electrical current supply is fully consumed, at which point the battery is not needed anymore. These types of batteries are used very commonly in small and portable piece of equipments that drain low current.

The other type is rechargeable or in other words secondary cells that can be “refueled” even after being completely consumed. For recharging, these batteries need some external help from devices as chargers or re-chargers.

In the present world due to the development of science and technology almost everything (papers, plastics, batteries, aluminum, etc.) can be recycled without wasting it by just throwing it after use. Thus we see that recycling is a procedure by which waste products are recovered for reusing, which is also known as waste management.

Laptop Battery recycling falls under electronic waste or e-waste. Here any discarded, broken or unwanted electrical or electronic equipments, containing toxic materials are recycled for further use. Batteries like, nickel-cadmium, lead, lithium batteries are made to reuse as the chemicals present in them can cause harm to the environment if allowed to stay long in open air after being discarded by the users. Moreover batteries are regarded as the most expensive energy source and their production requires much valuable recourse, so they are recycled so as to restore those valuable materials from those old and used batteries through battery recyling.

Cadmium is a heavy metal and can cause pollution if burned or cremated. To avoid lead pollution lead-aced batteries are processed. This program is considered to be highly successful. Lithium-ion can be very dangerous if exposed to high temperature or sunlight, it can ignite or explode. Therefore battery recycling is a must if we want to protect our environment.

The Recycling Process:

First of all, the batteries to be recycled are sorted according to chemistries such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride, lithium, alkaline etc. The combustible material, such as plastics and insulation, is then removed with a gas fired thermal oxidizer, which is the first step in the recycling process. Most recycling plants have scrubbers where the gases from the thermal oxidizer are neutralized to remove pollutants, producing clean, naked cells that contain precious metal content.

The metal in the inspiron 6400 batteries are then heated to liquefy, after they have been hacked into little pieces. Black slag left by burned out non-metallic substances are scraped off with a slag arm, and the different alloys that settle according to weight are skimmed off. Some plants pour the liquid metals directly into (65 pounds) or ‘hogs’ (2000 pounds) without separating on site, which are then shipped to metal recovery plants to produce nickel, chromium and iron re-melt alloy for the manufacturing of other metal products.

State and Federal Regulations in the United States:

The Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act was passed in 1996 by the U.S. Congress which requires regulated batteries such as Ni-CD batteries and sealed lead-acid batteries to:

1. be easily removable from consumer products to make it easier to recover them for recycling

2. include in the label the battery chemistry, the “three chasing arrows” symbol, and a phrase that instructs users to properly recycle or dispose the battery

3. provide national uniformity in collection, storage, and transport

4. phase out the use of certain mercury-containing batteries

By recycling batteries the environment is not being polluted nearly as much, many natural resources are saved due to the rechargeable laitude d620 batteries also. There is a large variety of websites on the Internet with more quality information on recycling batteries.

How to Re-calibrate laptop battery

How to Re-calibrate laptop battery

In the last artcile we know how to calibrate laptop battery. Now let me introduce some tips about re-calibrate laptop battery.

It is difficult to predict how long a laptop battery charge will last because each computer user has different habits and needs. The rate at which you use laptop battery power will determine how long you can use the battery of your laptop. You can re-calibrate your laptop battery if the battery’s life has gotten shorter over time. Your laptop battery might need a good calibration if it doesn’t seem to be getting the mileage that it should. How to re-calibrate laptop battery? The following paragraphs will give you the answer.

First put the laptop computer to sleep by turning off the screensaver and other power management settings of the computer. Then fully charge the computer and allow it to run all the way down until the computer shuts off automatically. Once the laptop battery has fully drained, charge it back up again and restore the screensaver and power management settings.

Re-calibrate your battery every month or so by fully charging, fully discharging, and then fully charging again. Basically to have a chance to re-calibrate your laptop battery is to turn off all power-saving features completely and then fully recharge them. If it doesn’t work for the first time then try two more full discharges and recharges.

The above way of re-calibrating the laptop batteries works well with laptops using Ni-MH cells. But not with laptops using Li-Ion batteries because deep discharges will actually decrease the charge capacity and lifespan of Li-Ion cells. Moreover Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year from the time of manufacture at a typical 100% charge level at 25deg.C, even when unused. Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 2%, 4%, 15% at 0deg.C, 25deg.C and 40deg.C respectively, when stored at 40% charge level. That is every deep discharge cycle decreases the capacity of the Li-ion batteries. As the Li-Ion batteries are chemical in nature, charging and recharging is not going to fix the problem once the chemical reactions stop happening. Therefore the best advice for re-calibrating the Li-Ion batteries is to store the battery at 40% charge if it kept unused for any unlimited period of time. Also don’t leave the battery in the laptop if you don’t use the battery or if you plug the laptop into outlet power.

You can also re-calibrate your laptop battery using Thinkpad T61 Battery Maximizer in order to maximize your laptop battery’s life. If your laptop has IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management features installed, you can verify the condition of the laptop battery. You can check the status of your battery using the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge in the taskbar tray. The ThinkPad’s Lithium Ion battery pack that seems to be an intelligent battery uses a microprocessor to monitor its capacity. Then the microprocessor of the battery pack passes the information about the remaining battery capacity to the laptop. The laptop indicates the capacity with high accuracy.

Using the Dell inspiron 6400 Laptop Battery Learning Utility, a modified version of a Win98 boot floppy, can also help you. Just place it in the floppy drive, and then turn on the computer. The re-calibration process is automated and takes about six hours to finish. This utility is available in different versions for different models. You can run the utility every two months.

If the laptop battery is still bad then it must have developed a memory that cannot be erased easily. If calibration doesn’t help, then it is the right time to purchase another battery.

Comfortable and easy Dell inspiron E1505 review

December 1st, 2008  Tagged , , , , ,

I purchased this laptop 2 months ago with the 1.83 Duo Core porcessor, 1 Gig RAM, 7200 RPM 60 Gig HD, Windows media center and office basic and True life screen. The computer is really quite fast and trouble free thus far. The E1505 or 6400 is a great laptop for the traveling power user. It is not so big that I can’t pack it from airport to airport, but is big enough that it is comfortable and easy to use. I have teh 1.86Ghz Core Duo, 2 GB ram, ATI X1400, Blutoot .

At 6 pounds, the inspiron E1505 battery will ship with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to dictate the overall multimedia offerings so you can enjoy TV, music, movies, and photos. Both the E1505 and 6400 will come equipped with Intel’s latest Dual-Core Duo processors at up to 2.0 GHz. To keep the prices down, these model only come with an integrated graphics solution however we suspect in the future (if demand calls for) there will be a discrete option.

The Dell Inspiron E1505 battery and Dell Inspiron 6400 are availablw now. Prices start at $929 for the E1505 and $979 for the 6400.

Performance from the 1.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 CPU is good choice for a budget mainstream portable and performed the very well on five of the seven tests, with a score of 231 on MobileMark 2005. Battery life, at 4 hours and 51 minutes, is excellent for a mainstream notebook. The 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphics engine means you can even play 3D games. The E1505 delivered 85 fps on F.E.A.R., using autodetect settings. Although that was at lower resolution and with some eye-candy turned off, it’s more than we expected from a notebook in this price class

Basic features for both models:

  • Choice of 15.4-inch WXGA, WXGA with TrueLife or WSXGA+ with TrueLife displays
  • Intel Core Duo and Core Solo processor options (667 MHz, 2 MB cache) at up to 2.0GHz
  • Up to 2 GB shared(3) 533 MHz DDR2 memory
  • Intel Integrated GMA 950 graphics
  • Serial ATA hard drive up to 100 GB 7,200 RPM
  • Fixed 16X CD-RW/DVD drive or 8X DVD+/-RW dual-layer drive

That’s the buyer’s review : I bought this laptop with a gig of ram, a 80 gig hard drive, an radeon 1400 graphics card, and a 1.86 dual core processor. It works great and i love how you can play dvd’s without booting windows. I can play all my games, even the graphics heav…y 3D ones.
I got the e1505 about 2 months ago and so far only managed to really screw it up once. I had to do the system restore (from the restore partition) and it only took about 10 minutes tops to reformat and reload the OS. The Radeon x1400 is very good for… what it is. I don’t run real high res in my games so it performs very nicely and still looks good. The display is very sharp and crisp and all text is very legible even for my poor ol’ eyes. It’s very quick at video rendering for DVD creation and the boot time is very fast (about a minute) due to a very quick HD. My only gripe is all the extra junk Dell feels the need to pile on, and the fact that a factory restore disc is extra (although that seems to be the norm anymore). All in all, it’s been a very good replacement for my aging desktop.
This laptop computer fits all my needs. I e-mailed this e-mail for the review on it. I do not know if I will ever want or use a different computer. It is perfact for any job that anyone may have or want.

The 15.4-inch UltraSharp widescreen display delivered strong colors when watching DVDs, even from a variety of angles. The speakers, which are located on either side of the playback controls, produced surprisingly good sound, even though the bass was a bit weak. This configuration has an 80GB hard drive for storing your digital music collection, along with gobs of photos and videos.

The Dell E1505 is commendably quiet — most of the time.  Even while watching a DVD, the fan remained off.  With a low power integrated video card, only one fan is needed to cool this machine.  The hard drive makes a subdued, but noticeable hum.

Only under heavier tasks does the fan does come on.  It has at least three speeds.  The lowest is very quiet, and more of a pleasing low pitched hum than an annoying whine.  Unfortunately, running benchmarks (which can cause sustained full processor usage, something most programs rarely do) will often cause the fan to quickly bypass first and kick into second and then third gear.  It seems that when the fan starts, the CPU continues to warm for a few moments while the cooling begins to take effect, triggering a higher fan speed that is not really necessary.  After a while it will slow back down and stay there.  If the fan is already running at a lower speed when the benchmark starts, it usually won’t speed up.  After 10 minutes of simultaneous 3DMark05 and Super Pi, the fan did go from the lowest to the middle speed.

Inspiron E1505 Battery life with the default 6-cell battery averages around three hours–not great, but not bad for a multimedia portable computer. Dell offers an upgrade to a 9-cell battery for under $100 if you need a lengthier life before recharging.

Its battery is very weak . Some users talk: I paid a premium for the 85Wh battery when I ordered my Inspiron E1505 and I am extremely disappointed that the battery has quit holding a charge after only 18 months…and now I’m looking at nearly $200 to order a replacement? I bought my Inspiron less than two years ago and I am now looking for my third battery. I should have purchased one way before now since I have to stay plugged up to use my laptop. Way too much money for a worst than terrible battery.Additional Thoughts I will not buy any more Dell laptops. http://reviews.dell.com/2341/312-0428/reviews.htm. I advice you buy a new laptop battery replacement in laptop battery shop

Dell includes a one-year limited warranty on these portable computers, which features at-home service if it’s needed. The one-year period has become the de facto standard for most PC vendors these days.

As they ship, the Dell Inspiron E1505 portable computers offer excellent core power and a good set of components. Gamers will want the graphics upgrade and video editors will want to step up the optical drive, but even if you do both, these portable computers still sell for well under a grand.

Dell inspiron 6000 review

November 20th, 2008  Tagged , , ,

You can see more on the Dell Inspiron 6000’s wide screen than on most other 15.4-inch displays thanks to its WUXGA resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. In fact, you can work with higher-resolution photographs, more spreadsheet columns, and more tiled documents simultaneously on the Inspiron 6000 than you can on some 17-inch wide screens.

Dell Inspiron 6000 D Specs:

  • 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M 730 (Sonoma), 533MHz FSB and PCIe x16 chipset
  • 15.4 inch WSXGA+ LCD Panel (Samsung)
  • 512 MB DDR2 400 MHz ram
  • 60 GB Ultra ATA Fujitsu 4200rpm hard drive
  • 64 MB ATi Mobility Radeon X300
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home
  • 24x CD-RW/DVD (Sony)
  • Intel 2200 b/g internal wireless card
  • 6-cell lithium ion inspiron 6000 battery
  • 4 USB ports
  • 1 IEEE 1394 FireWire port
  • Secure Digital I/O card slot
  • 1 PCMCIA card slot
  • 2 front facing speakers
  • VGA output
  • Optional S-Video and composite video out with adaptor cable
  • Audio-out (headphones) and Mic-in
  • Integrated 10/100 network Ethernet card
  • Internal 56k modem
  • 4 year on-site service warranty

In addition to the Sonoma technology, the Inspiron 6000 offers a number of improvements over the Inspiron 5160, which it will replace in Dell’s home/small business line-up. Upgraded features include a 15.4in. wide-screen display (available in WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA resolutions), a slightly slimmer profile (though it’s about 2.5cm wider), a better keyboard layout, optional Bluetooth, front edge media controls and four USB 2.0 ports. Also onboard are an S-Video output, FireWire, VGA, 10/100 Ethernet and modem connections, plus a multi-format, double-layer DVD burner. Hard drive capacities will range from 30GB to 80GB.

The machine comes normally with a 6-cell inspiron 6000 battery. So I ordered a second battery, a 9-cell one, and for some reason unknown to me Dell decided to make both batteries 9-cell, instead of giving me a small and a big one. Nice, two of these 80 Wh batteries will last a complete transatlantic flight, each one giving up to 5 hours of power.

The Inspiron 6000 is a smoothly designed, handsome laptop with a sloped front and cream-colored trim. Our unit had a multiformat DVD burner, plus FireWire and TV-out ports and four USB 2.0 ports, all placed for easy use. The 6000 accepts user upgrades easily. Like many laptops, it has two memory slots located in a compartment on the bottom of the laptop. But instead of residing in dovetailed slots, the modules lie side by side–an unusual arrangement that makes them more accessible than most. The hard drive is a breeze to remove, too: Just unscrew its bottom panel and tug the drive out through the right side of the case. Though the optical drive doesn’t have a lever for popping it out, you can boost it out by its lower edge after removing a security screw on the bottom of the case.

The 2-GHz Pentium M 760-equipped review unit did well in our speed tests, earning a WorldBench 5 score of 89, about 8 percent above the average for systems equipped with the same processor. To test the gaming ability of this system on the latest and greatest games I decided to use Doom 3. The Inspiron 6000 D with the 64 MB ATi X300 card didn’t do too well here. I could only get an average of 30 FPS when using low graphics settings and the 800×600 resolution. It looked pretty bad. Otherwise the game was working fine with all of its effects, characters, and maps.

The Dell Inspiron 6000 does not have a “stick” for mouse control, only a touchpad. A Kensington Pocket Mouse is a recommended extra. Having only used desktop keyboards before, a laptop keyboard takes time getting used to, but the keys are big enough and have enough “depths” to give a real typing feeling.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive 15.4 inch widescreen laptop with good battery life and moderate performance, the Dell Inspiron 6000 D is a good choice.
