How to replace and calibrate the Apple Macbook battery
Last week I bought a new Macbook battery from the Apple Store to replace the slightly aged one that came with the machine. I’m travelling shortly and I need enough juice to play MAME and Doom do some work while I sit in airports waiting for connecting flights.
Late last week a parcel came for me, my new laptop battery! Here’s how I replaced the old battery and calibrated the new one, with nice pictures.

The Macbook battery as (A1189 A1185,A1175) compartment is simple to open. Grab a coin, insert into the slot and twist.
Now, why couldn’t they make the iPod battery as easy to replace? Phone covers can be removed to get at the battery and sim card so it’s not a difficult job to do. There’s an interesting iPod battery FAQ here. I expect this question applies to any Lithium Ion Macbook Pro 13 battery Macbook Pro 15 battery Macbook Pro 17 battery, not just the iPod’s one.
Q: Is it okay to leave the iPod in the dock, or otherwise attached to external power, for extended periods of time?
A1: Yes. The iPod’s circuitry will no longer charge the apple laptop battery once it is determined to be full, even if the iPod is still attached to external power.
A2: This can also be a more complicated issue. Lithium ion batteries age faster when stored at full charge. If your usage of the iPod consists almost exclusively of use while plugged in for extended periods of time such as weeks or months, and very limited usage from the battery, the battery is essentially always in a charged state. A fully charged lithium ion battery ages at a faster rate than a lithium ion pa3451u-1brs pa3465u-1brs battery at the optimum storage capacity of approximately 40%. However, keeping an iPod battery near this optimum storage capacity can prove difficult to manage. A lithium ion battery also ages from use, as well as from storage, so the aging effects of constant use of the battery in order to keep the charge closer to 40%, versus constant use while attached to external power, come close to being even.
Once I switched my Macbook on again my new battery was at 39% already and following the official Apple docs:
- Charge the battery fully until the LED on the power cable goes green.
- Leave it plugged into mains power for 2 hours. (doing that now)
- Disconnect mains power and run the laptop off the battery until the machine goes to sleep.
- Turn off the machine or let it go to sleep for at least 5 hours.
- Plug the laptop into the mains again and fully charge the battery.
Tip: When the pa3451u-1brs pa3465u-1brs battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually holds a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, any open files could be lost. Therefore, it is important that you find an electrical outlet and connect the adapter before the forced shutdown occurs.
I wonder if calibrating your battery really helps? Has anyone done a controlled test over a length of time to compare two batteries?
I’m not sure why Coconut Battery reports that the “original battery capacity” was 5200mAh. Maybe that refers to my old battery? Please Notice this the tips can use in A1189 A1185,A1175.

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2GHz)
According to Apple, the update “…addresses battery performance issues with the 15-inch MacBook Pro.”
About Apple Battery Update 1.3
Apple Battery Update 1.3 updates battery firmware and addresses battery performance issues with the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Your computer’s power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source while running this update. The Apple battery update is for A1175, and cant fits for A1022 A1045 A1078 A1079.
After the Apple Battery Update has been installed, any additional batteries you put in your 15-inch MacBook Pro are automatically updated.
When will the battery be updated?
The BatteryUpdater will check to see if a Macbook Pro battery needs to be updated on startup, wake from sleep, and when a battery is inserted. If in these cases there is no AC power supplied, it will then wait until AC power is present and then check to see if the battery needs to be updated. If the battery needs to be updated it will update it automatically. Wait at least 30 seconds after inserting the battery, or wait 30 seconds after you’ve logged in with a user account, before checking to see if the battery was updated.
How to tell the Apple Battery Update 1.3 has been installed
In the Finder, navigate to the SystemConfiguration folder:
1. From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
2. Type /System/Library/SystemConfiguration, then click Go.
2. Select the file named BatteryUpdater.bundle.
3. From the File menu, choose Get Info and check the Version.

How to replace the HDD on the Aluminum MB and MBP
Hi everybody, I was thinking about replacing my HDD on my aluminum Macbook Pro 13 recently, and I thought it might be interesting to make a guide for all of those that have an alu-MB or MBP and would like to replace the HDD. You are going to need a 2.5inch laptop HDD, in the SATA format. I haven’t upgraded it yet, but I’ll show you a step by step process on how to replace it.
Step 1: To replace a HDD, you need to turn the computer completely off.
Step 2: Make sure that you have your data backed up to an external HDD, via Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Step 3: You are then going to flip the notebook over. Be sure to have a cloth or towel on the surface you’re laying to notebook on, to prevent any scratches.

Step 4: Now, you are going to flip the tab up that is near the bottom of the notebook. That will release the battery/HDD cover.

Step 5: Now that the cover is off, you are now going to unscrew the HDD screw. There is only one screw that you have to remove to replace the HDD.

Step 6: You then want to pull on the clear tab, to get the old HDD out of the notebook ( cant fits for Latitude D410) . Be careful not to damage the SATA connector pins while taking it out. Safely disconnect the HDD from the connectors.
Step 7: Now take the new HDD, and insert it into the HDD bay. Connect the approiate connectors to the HDD. It will be obvious on what to connect, because it’s just like matching up batteries in a TV remote.
Step 8: Now that you have the new HDD in, put the cover back on the back of the computer ( Dell inspiron 6400). Make sure that the cover is flush with the rest of the notebook, with no slight edge or the like. The tab will go back down automatically when you attach the cover.
Step 9: Flip the computer back over, and boot the system up. If you have a Time Machine backup, insert you Mac OS X install disc, and wait for the installer. You then will want to go up to the menu bar, and select “Restore”. laptop battery Make sure you have your Time Machine external HDD connected at this time. You will then go to Time Machine, and select the date to where you want to restore your system. Then you will be set, and ready to go.
If you are using Carbon Copy Cloner, and you already cloned your HDD, then it will be just like using your original HDD. You won’t need to use your Mac OS X install CD at all.
You now have installed your new HDD into your Aluminum Macbook or Macbook Pro. Enjoy!
