Canon EOS-10D review
The EOS 10D is the first digital SLR to offer Canon’s exclusive DIGIC Image Processor for maximum camera performance as well as direct connectivity to several Canon Bubble Jet Direct printers and the CP-100 Card Photo Printer. The camera’s body, constructed with rigid magnesium alloy covers, houses and protects a number of advanced camera features including a very fast, wide area 7-point autofocus system for precise focusing; 3 frames per second drive speed in 9-frame bursts in either JPEG or simultaneous RAW + JPEG capture settings; an extended ISO range of 100-3200; BP-511 battery, manual white balance mode; selectable color space options including Adobe RGB and sRGB; a scrollable 10x zoom playback mode; and a Plug and Play USB interface.
The EOS 10D supports EXIF 2.2, DPOF 1.1, FAT32, BP-511 battery and Compact Flash Type I and II, and is completely compatible with all EF-series lenses. The EOS 10D incorporates a large-area 6.3 megapixel CMOS sensor designed, developed and manufactured entirely within Canon. This sensor has the same picture area and aspect ratio (3:2) as the EOS D60, but features superior image quality thanks to peripheral circuitry improvements and a refined manufacturing process.
Speaking of power, the 10D uses the same BP-511/512 batteries as the D60 and several other Canon cameras. This 7.4V, 1100mAh battery has a total power rating of 8.1 Watt/hours (Wh). Canon has improved the battery life on the 10D. Now you can take about 650 shots per charge if you don’t use the flash (up from 620 on the D60), or 500 shots if you use the flash 50% of the time (up from 490). One thing to note about proprietary batteries like this — they’re expensive! Also, if you run out of juice “in the field”, you can’t just pop in some AAs to finish the day. The Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk includes the usual software: ImageBrowser/ZoomBroswer (Mac/PC), PhotoStitch, Remote Capture, and the File Viewer Utility. There are also TWAIN and WIA drivers for Windows. All of the main programs are now Mac OS X native. The camera does NOT mount on your desktop like some others — you’ll need to use Canon’s software or a card reader to get your photos off the camera in OS X. bp-511, bp-511, bp-511 battery, rechargeable bp-511, bp-511 li-ion battery, power ful bp-511, bp-511, bp-512, bp-512 battery
Highlights
- 6.3-megapixel, 22.7 x 15.1mm, 12-bit RGB CMOS sensor delivering 3,072 x 2,048-pixel images. Effective count of 6.29-megapixels and 2:3 aspect ratio.
- Single-lens reflex digital camera with interchangeable lenses (supports all Canon EOS series lenses). Focal length multiplier of 1.6x as compared to a 35mm camera.
- Variable ISO (100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600, and 3,200 settings).
- TTL optical viewfinder with detailed information display, diopter adjustment, and depth-of-field preview.
- 1.8-inch, low-temperature TFT LCD with 118,000 pixels.
- Automatic, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Depth-of-Field AE, Programmed AE (Landscape, Macro, Night Portrait, Portrait, Sports, and Flash Off), and Manual exposure modes.
- Operates in “shooting priority mode,” meaning the camera does not need to be set in “play” mode to view pictures. Pictures can be viewed in between shots, and even if camera is showing a picture or in a menu, pressing the Shutter button halfway prepares camera to take a photo immediately.
- Continuous Shooting mode capturing as many as nine images as fast as three frames per second with shutter at 1/250 second or faster.
- Variable white balance with Auto, six manual presets, Custom (reads from a neutral gray or white card), and a color temperature setting. White balance can be changed on-capture for RAW-format files, using either presets or manually selecting a neutral target in the image from which to reference white point
- 24-bit JPEG and 36-bit RAW data file formats. Available resolution settings are: 3,072 x 2,048; 2,048 x 1,360; and 1,536 x 1,024. Also have powerful BP-511, BP-512 battery.
The Canon EOS-10D (bp-511) is the best deal out there for a digital SLR camera. It’s hard to believe, but the 10D sells for $500 less than the Olympus E-10 I bought just a few years ago. It’s a heck of a lot more capable, too. The 10D offers all the benefits of a D-SLR, namely interchangeable lenses, support for external flashes, full manual controls, and robust performance. The 10D improves upon the already excellent EOS-D60 with its faster processing, more solid metal body, higher resolution LCD, improved playback mod.
